In the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina's Uptown Cultural Center stands a sort of monument to times gone by…A giant of a facade resembling a portico to something dynamic, but no longer in existence.
The portico is the tired, but strong remains of the grand entrance to the Carolina Theatre. It's once shiny and polished mosaic tile adorned pillars are scarred and the tiles cracked and dull from neglect….what is behind the portico? No, not the mezzanine, but just an empty lot in front of the rest of the old brick building housing the remnants of the stage. On a chilly and blustery afternoon this past month, I stood on that corner of North Tryon and Sixth Street staring in awe of this gruesome sight. It is a humbling experience and one of deep emotions…those feelings still nag at me and continue to urge me to do something. Thus, this first part of a series of articles regarding this theatre and its future or demise… The Carolina Theatre opened in 1927 as the Grandest Theatre in Charlotte.. also known as the Cathedral of Entertainment. It must have been like Cinderella at the ball, relishing in her grandeur and popularity. One can almost hear the flat sounds of the horns on the motorcars and the chitter chatter of the young couples, arm in arm , dressed in their best finery ,queuing to purchase tickets to the cinema.. the beginnings of the cultural center of Charlotte.[page2]
