      The Carolina Theatre

My Love Affair with this Charlotte Theatre

      Is My Love No More?

      Carol Befort..page2

Several groups in Charlotte are attempting to save this historical site and renovate the theatre to it's once grandeur state….a one year reprieve was just obtained from the City, enabling the raising of funds to reclaim the building from the City of Charlotte. In the mean time…..we view the "body" as the shell of a theatre in disrepair looming over the surrounding new buildings and the unique uptown shops in the area.

This theatre, the Carolina Theatre, is an awful eyesore, and imprints it's existence deep into one's soul….the windows fronting 6th street currently are filled with artwork resembling the life of the street people. The display of theatrical masks of all shapes and colors are hanging on a fence surrounding a lonely fire…The masks portray the homeless with many expressions of anger and despair… how bone-chilling fitting. If the Carolina Theatre could speak, I'm sure it would be of despair, anger and certainly of the embarrassment of it's undressing.

There must be several theatres of this stature in a state of ruination throughout the world. Do we save these theatres or trash them to dust and ruin? It is time, we, as members of the theatrical society, do our part and urge others to follow in rescuing these historical buildings, restoring them to a grandeur fitting to stage penned plays of current and future playwrights. What is the future of the Carolina Theatre?
