Joe's Notes

ON WRITING:
"Anyone with a somewhat creative mind can tell an interesting story. What separates the influential writers from the peripheral is the ability to create a compelling event truthfully-to really get at the heart of the matter without stepping outside and judging it. And by 'judging it', I mean commenting on the situation instead of just establishing it. I mean, how often have you seen a movie, play, or tv show where a particular character was a definite 'type', or a one dimensional cutout? But in reality, people are complex, diverse. A whore can be a saint, a cop can be a criminal. If you want your work to resonate, find the inherent truth in the scenario you're trying to depict."

ON LIVING:
"I don't claim to have it all together, but one thing I try to keep in mind is that the only constant is change. You have to take the downs with the ups and keep perspective on what it is you're really trying to do, 'cause if you fall into the trap of thinking that you have any semblance of control over the world at large, you will end up depressed. Love those that love you, respect those that respect you, and try to have as much fun as humanly possible. I quote 'Buckaroo Banzai' when I say, 'Treat me good, I'll treat you better. Treat me bad, I'll treat you worse."'
