Many creative writing students worry that if they submit their manuscripts to Hollywood or New York that their ideas will be stolen. Fat chance. Ninety-nine percent of the time you can't give the stuff away, much less have somebody steal it. Really -- it just isn't likely, but if you've gone off your lithium and are wearing your "I know I'm paranoid -- but am I paranoid enough?" T-shirt, you can always copyright yourself for ten dollars, although that would be better saved for postage. For honor remains in this field, and most editors and agents will give free advice -- provided you've reduced your ego to something smaller than California and that you've also sent along the all-important SASE. Lastly, a word to the wise, guys and gals. Excepting contests where the entry fee entitles you to a subscription, any agent or editor who charges money to read your stuff is a fraud and a con artist, and you're his easy mark. These people work on commission, and if they don't think they can sell your stuff they won't buy it. Period. End of conversation. The good news is that even from very busy New York agents you can get a good response on a cold call -- if you forge a red-hot query letter. Now all that's left is to strike the iron . . .END
